The Kazakh-German University is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan and was founded in 1999 on the private initiative of the public foundation “Kazakh-German Educational Cooperation” with the goal of training specialists to a German standard. To this day, the DKU is the only German university in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

In 2004 the university was successfully certified by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the German Academic Exchange Service, which confirms the high quality of education at the DKU. Three years later, in 2007, 20 first-year students began to study innovative specialties according to the German standard. This was preceded by a lot of work and the signing of an Agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, which provides  intensive support for the DKU by both states.

In 2008, during a visit to the DKU by German Federal President Horst Köhler, an agreement was signed on close cooperation between Germany and Kazakhstan to improve the DKU infrastructure. Agreements were also reached with the Mittweide Graduate School, the Schmalkalden Graduate School and the Wildau Graduate School on mutual recognition of examination results together with the  opportunity for  students to receive bachelor’s degrees in Germany and Kazakhstan. DKU continually improves its educational programs and expands opportunities for students so that their education at DKU is a solid foundation for building a successful career.
